A Lynching in Brunswick, Georgia

In Brunswick, Georgia, Ahmaud Arbery was lynched on February 23 by three white supremacists, a retired career cop, Gregory McMichaels, his 34-year-old son, Travis McMichaels, and Brian Williams. As of today, no one has been arrested for the murder. The corruption and lies ensue.

Arbery’s mother, Wanda Cooper, was initially told by local law enforcement that her son was involved in a house robbery and was killed by the home owner. That is a lie. Arbery was jogging and the McMichaels and Williams assumed that, as a Black man, he must be a criminal—or they just wanted to terrorize and kill a Black person. They followed the jogger, accosted him, and shot the victim at close range. Quite clearly, Arbery was lynched. Most recently, the Brunswick police department has recanted their lie about how Arbery came to die.

It is obvious—at least to Black people—that this country and this world is not a safe place for us. Looking around, it seems as though non-Black and white people are just going on living their best lives, as Black people (men, womxn, and children) get kicked out of their homes in China, are savagely beaten for not social distancing (or just for fun), or lynched while jogging to keep healthy. As a reminder, nothing changes if nothing changes; so if you want justice for Ahmaud Arbery, irrespective of one’s race, go to runwithmaud.com and follow the action steps.

Never give up. Peace and Power to People.
